Driving in Glasgow is simple, with only the very centre experiencing heavy congestion. Roads are high quality, with many dual carriageways providing fast access across the city. Touring Scotland is easy with the Scotish highlands within a short drive. Making Glasgow your base is very sensible, with the famous islands and highlands on your doorstep and Edinburgh only a 40 minute journey. Parking is plentiful and the main airports of Prestwick and Glasgow international are both a short distance from the city centre. Bus and Train services from Glasgow railway station serve the whole of the UK, with fast trains to London (5 and a half hours) and Edinburgh Waverley Station. Bus services and taxi services are comprehensive and reasonably priced, however, for exploring Scotland a car is essential. Fine Victorian architecture and internationally acclaimed museums and art galleries are abundant. Festivals and special events are all year around, plus fantastic shopping, great bars and restaurants with lively nightlife. Parks and gardens are a must see, while castles and great country houses surround the city. Driving is on the left, with right hand drive cars. Glasgow was chosen as a European city of culture in 1990 and with a large student population the city has a youthful character. For visitors that want to travel further afield, Glasgow offers easy access to Scotland's great mountains, glorious glens, fine lochs and unspoilt west coast shoreline. Loch Lomond is only 32km (20 miles) away and has many tourist attractions. The city's northern latitude dictates that summer days are long and light, but the weather tends to be unpredictable with cold and wet winters. Traffic inthroughout the UK drives on the left and over takes on the righthand side of the road. Main roads are preceeded by a letter, followed by up to 4 numbers with an 'M' indicating a motorway while an 'A' is a major trunk road. Speed limits are 113kph or 70mph on motorways and 97kph (60mph) on single lane roads. In built up areas the limit is 48kph (30mph). Seatbelts are compulsory and motor cyclists must wear their helmets. The amount of alcohol legally allowed in your blood while driving a car is 0.08%. Be aware of parking restrictions, parking attendants will fine you if you take a chance! Insurance for hiring a car is usually included, but a heafty excess deposit is normally required. This insurance excess can be reduced, if you rent a car through us. Virgin Trains have West Coast main line services to London Euston railway station, while GNER runs services on the East Coast main line route to London Kings Cross station via Edinburgh city. Scot Rail provide a night train service on the Caledonian Sleeper to Euston in London with a journey time of 7 hours. Scot Rail also offers services from Oban, Dundee, Aberdeen, Fort William and Inverness station. There is a half hourly train service from Edinburgh (50 minutes journey) to Queen Street station and from Carlisle, Lanark, Largs, Ayr, Kilmarnock, East Kilbride, Dumfries and Stranraer to Glasgow Central station.
